The day after Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park, we went to see a gold mine. The tour guide was a high school student, but he was really well trained and did such a good job with the kids that it was quite enjoyable. The kids did actually learn a lot about gold mining, what hard dangerous work it was, and how little it often paid.
Everyone wore hard hats which was fun!

They did do a lesson on panning for gold at the end of tour. We chose not to spend the extra money to do that. We figured only Kyle actually had the patience and we were all getting a little hungry so went out for lunch instead! :)
